DT Max T1

1. Version highlight – Amendment to the calculation of the 2014 Family Tax Cut

The 2015 Federal Budget has introduced, for 2014 and subsequent years, an amendment to the calculation of the Family Tax Cut for the eligible spouses who transfer education–related tax credits to each other (tuition, textbook and education credits).

In fact, Schedule 1–A has been revised by the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) to allow the unused tuition, textbook and education credits to be transferred from a spouse or common–law partner. The amount now indicated on line 12 of Schedule 1–A is the amount, if any, remaining after the tuition, education, and textbook amounts (from line 360 of Schedule 2) are subtracted from the amounts transferred from the spouse or common–law partner from line 326 of Schedule 1. Under the Family Tax Cut, this amendment may earn the taxpayers involved an additional amount ranging from $2.00 to $750.00.

This new version of DT Max will allow you to get the appropriate credit amount for the Family Tax Cut that applies for tax year 2014. Returns that were assessed prior to the legislative change receiving Royal Assent and the update of CRA systems are being automatically reassessed by the CRA where it is apparent that, because of this change, the taxpayer was entitled to an increased amount of the Family Tax Cut for 2014. In order to determine which clients will be affected by this change, you may follow the procedure below:

  1. Make sure that you are in tax year 2014 in DT Max.
  2. Under the Client List tab, sort the list alphabetically by clicking on the "Name" column header.
  3. On the Client List toolbar, in the Filter section, click the drop-down arrow and select the "Family Tax Cut" filter from the list. Depending on the size of your database, this could take some time.
  4. Optional: Print the list by going to the menu and selecting "File", then "Print", and then "Client List". Be sure to select the option "All clients on database" before clicking the "OK" button.
  5. To disable the filters and list all the contents of your client database, from the Tools menu, select "Filter the client list", then tick the "No filter" option and finally click on "Apply filter", or select "Do not filter" from the drop-down menu appearing in the top left-hand corner of the client list.
